Lion wins.
A lion and a crown on silver typically represent the mark of a specific assay office or the symbol of a country, often associated with British or Commonwealth silver. The lion signifies strength and courage, while the crown symbolizes royalty and authority. Together, they indicate that the silver has been tested for purity and meets quality standards, often referring to sterling silver. These marks serve as a guarantee of the silver's authenticity and craftsmanship.
A lion standing on its hind legs often symbolizes strength, courage, and dominance. This posture may also represent a heightened state of alertness or readiness to defend territory. In various cultures and art forms, it can signify leadership and power, embodying the lion's role as a king of the jungle. Overall, this imagery highlights the majestic and formidable nature of the lion.
nearly wiped out the Aisian lion(under 300 left in the world) nearly wiped out the mountain lion, or cougar, (with under 1000 left in the world ) and nearly wiping out the African lion (under 3000 left in the world). if you think that 3000 is a lot, guess how many humans there are in the world: 8 and a half BILLION!
If the lion is passant (walking) it is a symbol of English sterling silver. If the lion is rampant (standing on hind legs) it is a symbol of Scottish sterling silver.
On coins it is the lion - there are three lions on an asoka pedestal - one facing out, one facing left, one facing right.
In the UK it has to carry the lion passant (a lion lying and facing to the left), plus a date letter and the mark of an assay office, plus perhaps a maker's mark. A '925' is optional but does not seem to be common, but the lion indicates sterling silver which is 92.5%.
Made by W.& S. Blackinton Co. from Meriden, Connecticut, I believe. Markings include a horse (or unicorn's) head facing right, the initials "W & SB", the lion facing left. Probably also marked as EPC or EPN (electro-plated copper or nickel). If Electro plated, then not very valuable.
The 1826 British Shilling and Sixpence coins are both sterling silver and both have a lion standing on a crown on the reverse. The Shilling is 23.5 mm in diameter. The Sixpence is 19 mm in diameter.
