To run. The first thing a horse will do when frightened is to run. If they feel trapped then they will fight by rearing and by kicking. Its called "Fight or flight". Fight or run.
A horse will bolt (run) and can squeal. If a horse is really scared, or has fear, there would be little whites in their eyes.
Horses are the natural prey of several large predators and it pays them to be a bit hyper in this regard. And as much as I love them, they are a bit stupid, anything scary-looking to them is dangerous,
The opposite of instinct is having no regard for self preservation. For example, if there was danger, the instinct is to flee. The opposite of instinct would be to go towards the danger.
when a baby cries for a toy would that be an instinct or a learned behavior
He will often pin his ears against his head and toss his head. His eyes will widen till you can clearly see the whites. He will stomp snort, and even try to run. Be prepared if you are riding and they spook. Speak calmy and stroke their necks. They will soon feel safe. Just remember, if your scared, your horse will be scared. Watch for the signs.
If your horse has it's ears slightly back then that means It's listening to something behind them. However, if your horse has it's ears pinned back all the way, then that means it's angry at or scared by something.
The main instinct of a horse would be the flight instinct. Because horses are prey animals, they are always on the alert for any smells, sounds, and sights of predators. When a horse is spooked by something, whether it be a predator that wants to kill, or simply a plastic bag blowing towards them, their first instinct is to run first and think later. Another instinct is the herd instinct. Horses are naturally herd animals, which is why you must provide your horse with another animal for company (Cow, goat, another horse, etc.). Horses tend to stick together in a herd for safety, company, warmth/cleanliness, etc. If you separate a horse from a herd it has grown up, it may become distracted or call out to it's friends because it is apart from them.
When horses all lived in the wild, they had to be suspicious in able to live. What's behind that rock? It might be a mountain lion! Oh no, better check it out! See? If a horse didn't check things out first, they would have just walked into trouble. This instinct has been passed on generation to generation. At first, it helped keep horses alive, but now that they are domesticated, they don't need to check everything out. But they still have that instinct, so they do anyway. Just in case.

yes, i would let them calm down before trying to hold it...or it might attack out of instinct
That depends. They are herd animals so the tendency would be to bolt and leave the area. Some horses are different tough. Ivan, my walker, will freeze up completely whenever anything scares him. He has never bolted and ran. Other horses I have owned will try to flee instantly.
Fears seen in horses are thought to be related to their natural instinct as if they were in the wild. Wild horses live in herds, and at any sign of danger will run. Sudden noises and movements would be what the dominant leader of the herd would be wary of, so that is why so many horses often 'spook' at something unexpected. A horse being afraid of a piglet, or any other animal, may be to do with their wild predators.

It is common for horses to be frightened of pigs, but nobody really knows why. You can help him overcome his fear by working with him to put all his trust in you.
-CloudRox

alot of horses are scared of cats. because cats have sharp claws, cats could just randomly climb on the horse. poor horse the claws would dig into the horse. that would hurt
because they are scared . And they have very good hearing and if you heard a load noise would you panic?! i think you would lol

I would suggest you not ride a horse if you are afraid of them. This is a choice to ride or not. I dislike roller coasters and will not go on one. I make that choice and so can you about horses. or, if you want to get over your fear, start riding lessons with an experianced instructor. let her know that you are scared of horses, and they will help you.
i would imagine very scared
A horses first instinct is to run. If he can't run, he will turn and fight. However, through training, horses can be taught to not run away or fight but rather stay calm when their rider or handler is calm. they might rear up in the air. They might also run away. If they are in a herd, they will warn the others. Horses might also attack a predator.
