Dogs may also lick your face to display their subordinancy. They are recognizing that you are the alpha. It is a good thing, but don't let them do it for excessive amounts of time.

∙ 14y agoUnfortunately, the answer is a little disgusting and disappointing. Licking on the face isn't really seen as a kiss by dogs. It's an instinctive behehavior they exhibit to appease those higher on the ladder than themselves and for those who provide them food. In their wild ancestors, puppies lick the lips and jowls of adult dogs in the pack to stimulate the adult to regurgitate partially digested food. Very young puppies are not able to eat meat and need this partially digested food to help them make the transition from nursing to eating meat.
