because its essential to the ecosystem. if the African elephants go extinct then everything relying on them would be damaged. their waste helps nurture the land and plants of Africa and some smaller animals are relying on them like the dung beetle. Plus the elephant is pretty dang cool, now who wants to lose that? haha :)their probably some other reason why too but that's the main idea i could think of.

Do elephants stay in herds?

Elephants live in the forest and raise their young there. Young ones stay with the herd for a few years until they are old enough to fend for themselves. Adolescent males leave the group while females stay with the group forever. The herd is lead by a Matriarch which is the oldest female in the herd. The whole herd takes care of rearing and protecting the youngsters.

Do African elephants form a circle around the babies to protect it?

probably do because elephants are very family oriented and will stay together for life. If one dies the other will stay near and fight off vultures etc. until the rest of the group starts to walk away. there is a story recently of a dog and elephant that were friends for years and when the dog was killed by wolves the elephant picked the dead dog up with its trunk and carried him for a couple of miles to the gate of the home
