because its essential to the ecosystem. if the African elephants go extinct then everything relying on them would be damaged. their waste helps nurture the land and plants of Africa and some smaller animals are relying on them like the dung beetle. Plus the elephant is pretty dang cool, now who wants to lose that? haha :)their probably some other reason why too but that's the main idea i could think of.
very protective of their family against predators...hunting animals and humans. They are known to be in groups ....herds. Should an elephant become distressed it shortens their life expectancy and can affect breeding.

Elephants live in the forest and raise their young there. Young ones stay with the herd for a few years until they are old enough to fend for themselves. Adolescent males leave the group while females stay with the group forever. The herd is lead by a Matriarch which is the oldest female in the herd. The whole herd takes care of rearing and protecting the youngsters.
