Maybe many people buy pets because they want to feel loved or they want to give love to another, either conditionally or unconditionally. The problem is that they often use pets as a replacement need, when they really need to give and receive love from humans, or that having a pet takes away the time and energy one can give to a human, and they treat pets better than people on the street. Also maybe they buy pets not realizing the noise they will make, the work they will entail, and the need to clean up after the pets waste. Sometimes pets can serve a purpose, do a job, like guarding a house, leading the blind, or for therapy for the emotionally unstable, or tending a herd of sheep, etc.

I think many people buy pets because they are missing something, some kind of love, and they want to buy what they don't have rather than form connections with their community and society and family. And also it is everyone's business, when a certain animal makes noises that disturb others, or when attention and energy is redirected to an animal in a world of starving people or people starving for attention and human contact. It is everyone's problem when the world starts going to the dogs...

I also think seriously that many people buy pets to enlarge their egos, both men and women. I think people who have neither overblown or underdeveloped egos, but rather healthy ego/I/me identity have the least need of anyone for a pet. That is my pet theory. And also who is the one that is doing the real manipulating?
