DNA sequencing is an analytical method used in the laboratory to find out the sequence of nucleotides on a strand (or chain) of DNA. It does not cause any disorders.

What causes disorders are mutations, which are unregulated changes in the DNA sequence that happen within the body

What is the preferred name of the technique used to determine if DNA comes from a particular individual?

DNA sequencing! It kind of looks like this (for example): | | | | The DNA is negatively charged, and when placed into a tray filled with a special gel and a positive current towards the far side, the smaller strands of DNA move farther then the bigger ones. If this is done a individuals DNA can easily be matched. Some examples of real life situations that would utilize DNA sequencing are in a rape investigations, where semen collected from the victim can be matched to a suspect. Also, DNA sequencing can be used to determine heredity. If a child was trying to be matched to a parent, then HALF the DNA strands would match, since a child posses 1/2 of their DNA from the mother and 1/2 from the father.

Why can a paternity test only disprove paternity?

Most paternity tests are based on comparisons of DNA. DNA evidence can only exclude suspects. DNA sequencing is used because there are so many different sequences you could have at any one place, the odds of any 2 people, except identical twins, having the same DNA is nearly impossible. However, if people are very closely related (like father-son), they will share a number of common sequences on a DNA test. We'll say 5 out of 10. Though it's usually VERY unlikely, 2 completely unrelated people can still share sequences in certain places. This is why it can only legally disprove paternity cases. If 2 people shared no sequences, they couldn't be related. That's not to say, however, that 2 people who share a number of similarities are related.

Does the DNA of say 2 mosquitoes differ?

All DNA is different so yes the DNA of 2 mosquitoes does differ but not much

Why would anyone want to extract DNA?

If you're referring to Stem Cell Research, Scientists can use that DNA to grow an organ that you might need to be replaced with a much lower risk of having the body reject it than if you took it from another person.
