9The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 17For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. 10For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Lady Eleanor was sentenced to penance for her crime, which consisted of walking around the town wearing only a shift and carrying a candle.

Roman Catholic AnswerPenance is the virtue or disposition of heart by which one repents of own's own sins and is converted to God, the Sacrament of Penance is the current term used for what we used to call Confession. "Father X commonly gives me 5 Hail Mary's for my penance; while Fr. Y sometimes gives me a whole rosary for my penance!"
