It cost my husband and I about $1,800 to rent a 17 foot truck for the 5 day journey from Minneapolis, MN to Olympia, WA (about 1700 miles). That was for rental and gas. Keep in mind that when the truck is full, it will probaly only get 8 miles or so per gallon. Other moving companies would have charged a similar price. The 17 foot truck wsa large enough to hold all of our belongings to fill a very cramped 850 sq. ft. apartment.

For distances over 300 miles,it's frequently the same price to pay a professional moving company as to do U-haul. This assumes you pack everything yourself, and they load it. I would call and get estimates from three different moving companies, then check rental truck prices. It it's going to cost the same, it's a lot less worka and hassle to pay the movers.

There was a similar question on Moving s.org regarding a move from California to Kansas. A lady was asking how much cheaper it would be for her to rent a Uhaul and drive it to Kansas, as compared to hiring a full service moving company. It turned out that it will actually be cheaper for her to hire a long distance mover, rather then move by herself. (See the link to the right)

The cost of a move depends on the distance traveled, so exact cities

would be needed for an accurate quote. Have you considered moving pods, where you pack a portable moving container and the company picks them up and moves them to your location? Typically someone in a 1k sq ft residence might require 3 to 4 portable storage containers (depending on the size of the containers.) Assuming the Midwest means Chicago and California means San Francisco, 3 moving pods would run somewhere around $2600 and if 4 containers were required it would be roughly $3000.

The exact moving costs would depend on which cities you're moving to and from, but you can get a quick quote from most moving companies online. Some companies offer moving containers that are great for smaller moves--you can reserve 2-3 containers, but if you only fill 1 or 2, you're only charged for the space you use (a typical 1 bedroom apartment uses 1-2 containers). It works very similar to a moving trailer option--an empty 28' trailer is delivered to your home, and you pack and load, only using the space you need. A 'per-foot' rate allows you to control your final charges.

What can I use to move heavy furniture from one space in a room to another?

You can either buy or rent a dolly to move furniture from one space in a room to another. You should always have at least two people to move furniture around. Depending on how heavy the furniture is and what type of flooring you have, two people could move the furniture. You can also purchase furniture sliders. Sliders are coated sliding discs that are placed under the legs of the furniture. Then you can slide the furniture to a different space in the room. You can also get furniture straps. The straps allow two people to move heavy furniture.

What is the best way to keep Lea furniture looking good?

Lea furniture is very well made and should last for generations, even with the hard use that children subject furniture to. A few dents and scratches just add character. As with all wood furniture, moisture can damage the finish, so coasters should be used under all drinks. Dust regularly and take care of spills immediately.
