Remove the belt from your Mercury alternator. Remove the wiring harness from the alternator. Remove the retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install your new alternator.
There isn't any fuse then is linked to the alternator on a 1996 Mercury cougar. The alternator has an internal regulator, but does not have a fuse.
Repairing the alternator is not a do-it-yourself project. Replacing them is the typical approach. If you have the smaller size 3.0 "Vulcan" engine, the alternator is on top of the engine. Pretty easy replacement. The 3.0 Duratech engine alternator on the otherhand is down on the bottom - accessed from the front passenger-side wheelwell opening. I can tell you that on a 2000 mercury cougar it is a fuse on the positive cable between the battery and the alternator
The alternator is mounted low on the back side of the engine.
If the bearings in the alternator get bad enough it can lock up.

I have a 2.0 1995 Mercury mystique the battery charge light was on no output on old alternator. Replaced alternator No output from new alternator "charge light out" (wiggle test wires& re-check wires) at alternator *still no output* is there a fuse that could be the problem or just another bad alternator... I would check the alternator plug before getting another alternator, it may be bad. And is a lot cheaper to replace.
