Yes and no.
Olives themselves are great and have loads of health benefits - high in antioxidants, protect against Heart disease, promote gastrointestinal health, yada yada.
However, sometimes the treatment and processing of olives to cure them and make them black is not so good. This doesn't seem to be a problem with green & brown olives, kalamata, etc. However some food companies allow acrylamides to enter during the processing, which is not so good. its a probable carginogen and pretty yucky stuff all round, so best avoided.
I try to stick to more natural version of olives, and give the black ones a miss (they also happen to be the least tasty olives). Although they're hard to avoid as they are the cheap ones the pizza companies love spattering around.
Note - dont confuse black olives (which have been chemically treated) with natural brown olives, like Kalamata or Manzanilla, or Mission which is actually pretty black-looking. If the jar is labelled "Black Olives" chances are its the bad sort. At least, this is how I have seen it sold in UK, South Africa & Australia ... maybe the US is different I don't know.
