This depends on if you are talking about the film version, or the novel. The latest film, which stars Will Smith, has changed the original story. In the film, the creatures are more like Zombies than vampires. However, in the book, they are meant to be vampires of two sorts, living, and the 'undead'. The living are intelligent, animated, and capable of survival, whereas the undead are not as intelligent, driven by their desire to feed.
