Metro PCs is able to "flash" phones from other carriers for use with their service under certain conditions. The phones must be CDMA, meaning they do not use a SIM Card (Major CDMA carriers include Sprint, Verizon, Qwest, Cricket, Alltel). You will not be able to access all features of the service when using a flashed phone, these phones are good for calls and texting only.
The phone does not be unlocked to be flashed.

∙ 12y agounfortunately most Verizon phones do not use a sim card. However any Verizon phone that is called a World Phone not only uses Verizon but you are able to put a sim card in it.

The companies will keeps their separate names and stores, but will begin using each others' cell towers and bandwidths. The iPhone 5 just mastered T-Mobile's bandwidths which means it could use those bandwidths for Metro. Considering Apple made the iPhone available to over a dozen regional carriers in the US since the debut of the iPhone 4S, it would seem almost impossible for Apple not to sell their iPhone on Metro.
