the samurai were abolished by the emperor of Japan during the meiji era. as a result it is no longer possible to attain the status of samurai. however before the meiji era samurai were required to study the Bugei Juhappan which refers to 18 martial skills to be learnt by the common Japanese warrior. on top of this samurai were supposed to learn noncombat skills such as poetry, Flower Arranging and etiquette.

samurai lived frugal lives with no interest in riches or material things, but rather in honor and pride. Samurai had no fear of death. They would enter any battle no matter the odds. The Code of the Samurai sometimes called the "The Seven Virtues of the Samurai" was originally verbally passed of to each generation but over time it was changed to the written form of Bushido, Bushido means "Way of the warrior", this is a Japanese code of conduct and a way of life. Bushido is the code of moral principles, which the samurai were required or instructed to observe. If a samurai failed to obey The Seven Virtues and uphold his honor he could regain it by performing seppuku (ritual suicide).

Here are The Seven Virtues associated with bushido:

Gi - Rectitude

Yū - Courage

Jin - Benevolence

Rei - Respect

Shin- Honesty

Meiyo - Honor

Chū - Loyalty

Others that are sometimes added to these:

Kō - Filial piety

Chi - Wisdom

Tei - Care for the aged

These are the qualities that the samurai should have.
