The concern when taking warfarin (coumadin) is the amount of vitamin K ingested. Vitamin K can reduce the anti-clotting action.
Generally, the highest amounts of vitamin K are found in green leafy vegetables. There is a moderate amount in V8, and even less in Tomato Juice. An occasional small glass of V8 is probably not harmful, but sticking to regular tomato juice in reasonable quantities is even safer. See the Related Links below the ads.
Combining any medications, even herbal remedies without consulting an expert could be disastrous. A doctor or pharmacist should be consulted. Even natural substances and herbs should be used with caution.
Beetroots are made up of two edible parts -- the root and the dark green, leafy beet greens. Beets and their greens differ substantially in their vitamin K content; a single one cup serving of cooked beet greens contains nearly 700 micrograms of vitamin K while a serving of cooked root contains only 0.170 micrograms of vitamin K and is not considered a significant source of vitamin K.
Vitamin K can interfere with Coumadin's (warfarin) action in the liver, resulting in an increased risk of blood clots. Doctors advise people on Coumadin to eat very small amounts of foods, including beet greens, that contain high amounts of vitamin K, but to regularly eat moderate amounts of foods with medium to very low vitamin K content, such as beetroot.
