College admissions depend on many factors. Some of these factors includes the type of school you are attending and, most importantly, the rigor of the academics at that particular school. I do not mean to sound condescending but I have been browsing Yahoo answers as well as wiki answers for some time now regarding college related issues and every single time I see someone saying their weighted GPA is like near 5.0 and their SAT score is uncharacteristically low. This, to me, says one thing. The school which that particular student is attending is public and offers a ton of AP classes such as AP Weightlifting (joke),AP Environmental Science (joke class), AP Drama, etc. Usually students who have a very, very high weighted GPA and a non-reflective or nearly so SAT score or AP test scores go to mediocre public schools with mediocre academic reputations. I go to a private school but have certainly experienced and have had contact with the public system through one of my closest friends. In my school, which has an impressive academic reputation, a 4.0 unweighted GPA is certainly hard to earn. I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and my first try on the SAT resulted in a 1950. My second try resulted in a 2020. My AP scores so far are 5 on English Language and Composition and 4 on AP US History. I am also from Another Country and speak a foreign language at home. You seem to have a GPA reflective of your SAT score and, therefore, I think you should be a good candidate granted you also write a great essay and take a significant amount of AP classes with good scores on the exams. Chapel Hill is also near the top of my list for colleges. Good luck! I hope to see you there one day.

No, you can't. Learn how to write first. Then, research the content. Harvard is a highly elite school, that really don't care about the convulated areas of life that had a negative implication on your life, that made your grades be so low. Although, if you do have a lot of other things going for you such as EC's and Class Rank, etc. you might have somewhat of a change, but I highly doubt it, but still aim high and you might just get there.

Most likely not. I have a 4.1 and I haven't taken the SAT yet but I am not sure if I will get in with a 4.1. If you play sports are in many clubs, maybe.

What do you add to your unweighted average?

You can't convert an unweighted average into a weighted average simply by adding something. You have to do the whole calculation for the weighted average.

If an H in a weighted honors class is 5.00 and you make an A which is a weighted 4.50 does this mean your unweighted GPA drops below a 4.00?

it shouldn't affect your unweighted GPA, as long as your weighted GPA is higher than a 4.0 then your unweighted stays a 4.0 (hopefully this makes sense)

Will having a 3.96 unweighted 4.96 growing weighted as a result of one Honors level B plus still be viable for Columbia admission?

Absolutely! Those are excellent grades. Most Ivy Leagues schools want their applicants to have upward of a 3.85 Unweighted, 4.7 Weighted. One B plus will not hurt you in the slightest.

When applying to college do you list your weighted or unweighted GPA?

They will almost always tell you if you look hard enough on the application or call someone at the college. Most schools want your unweighted GPA, although many will look at both.

What is a 97 average equal to in a GPA?

It depends on your professor's standards, an "A" can vary between 90-100 and a weighted class is worth more. Your 97 is probably an A and if the class is weighted then that translates to a 5.00, if it is unweighted then it is counted as a 4.00.

Can a 3.46 unweighted GPA or around a 3.8 weighted and a 1970 on the SAT's possibly get me into BC or NYU?

What is the difference between a GPA and a unweighted GPA?

There are two types of GPAs that high schools can report to colleges. Depending on your high school, your transcript can report a weighted GPA or an unweighted GPA (or both). Check with your guidance counselor if you're unsure of your school's policy.A weighted GPA is going to give you brownie points for challenging yourself with harder classes. For example, Advanced Placement and Honors classes are generally more difficult and demanding than Academic classes are. Therefore, many schools offer an extra quality point that can be added to the GPA to "make up" for the difficulty. For example, a "B" in an AP class may be translated into an "A" in an academic class, based on a weighted GPA. Weighted GPAs can also factor in any +'s you might have. For example, an A+ would be given extra points over an A.An unweighted GPA however strips all these brownie points away and leaves you with exactly what you've earned in your classes. A B is a B is a B, according to an unweighted GPA, and an A+ becomes a regular A. In the American education system used by most high schools, the highest unweighted GPA is a 4.0. (Weighted varies widely).SAMPLE GPA SCALEGrade Earned/ UW GPA/ W GPAA....................4.0...........5.0B....................3.0...........4.0C....................2.0...........3.0D....................1.0...........2.0F................No credit......1.0It's important that you challenge yourself with AP/Honors classes. The weighting can really help out your GPA. You should be warned though, most colleges will recalculate weighted GPAs on their own scale (which is always unweighted).
