Yes. Turtles have been known to carry Salmonella. They should be handled appropriately. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling a turtle or its habitat. Small children should not be permitted to handle them due to the concern. They might not understand what they should do and could put their hands in their mouth or touch other objects before cleaning their hands. The U.S. banned the sale of turtles under 4 inches because of the problem. See Related Links.
In Illinois, schools and daycares are legally not allowed to keep reptiles in classrooms because of the risk of Salmonella. Several outbreaks of Salmonella have been linked to reptiles in the relatively recent past. That said, I would not agree with anyone who says the illness risk is so grave that you should not get or keep a reptile assuming you have a healthy immune system. Keep your hands very clean and be conscious of handwashing whenever you handle your turtle or the water for the turtle and you should be OK - unless, of course, the disease argument is your parent's tactful way of saying no. In that case, you should accept the inevitable conclusion to the discussion :-)
ALL reptiles carry salmonella - HOWEVER - the risk of catching it is EXTREMELY small. Basic hygiene after handling (wash your hands) will all-but eliminate any chance of infection.
Also remember to wash your hands before handling the animal. You can harbor diseases as well. Chelonians typically have a higher chance of spreading salmonella than other reptiles.
No unless it has a deseasee if it's healthy its fine.
Turtles naturally carry salmonella. If you don't wash your hands after handling them you can get sick from the germs. However you should wash your hands after touching any animal regardless.
