He had no dreams that he wrote down for posterity to read. He may have dreamed of a military career when he was a small boy listening to his father's stories about life in the army. (His father served as a non-com under Washington in the Revolutionary War and he later became a general in the New Hampshire state militia.) Franklin was not overly ambitious but was generally content with dabbling in state politics and doing his legal work. He resigned his Senate seat before his term was up and turned down a later offer to be appointed to the Senate. President Polk offered him the cabinet post of Attorney General of the US which he turned down.
