Egypt in the Ancient Period controlled far less land than Egypt in the modern period. Although the Sinai is now part of Egypt, it was not at that point and God did lead the Israelites through the Sinai, but did not direct them in Nile Basin (ancient Egypt), which the Israelites would have been familiar with and thus would have needed no direction.

It is important to note that while maps of Ancient Egypt show it "controlling" the Sinai Peninsula at various points, this "control" was through indirect vassals and tributes, not through a standing infrastructural connection.

How important was Moses to the Israelites?

The Israelites had been oppressed by the Egyptians for over 400 years. When God sent 10 plagues over Egypt, pharaoh let the Israelites go.......but not for long. He quickly changed his mind and pursued them. The Israelites were scared and asked, "Were there not enough graves in Egypt that the Lord will let us die in the desert?" Moses replied, "Stand firm and you will see the deliverance of the Lord today." Moses then parted the Red Sea and the Israelites went through on try ground. When Pharaoh's army tried to cross, God closed the waters and Pharaohs whole army drowned. They were able to see the deliverance of the Lord.......thats why it's such a big event. (I had to study Exodus for over 6 months......thats why I knew the answer!!) ~Bible Quizzer~

What is Ehya?

In Exodus 3:13 Moses asks God whom he should say sent him, when the Israelites want to know who is going to free them from slavery to Pharaoh in Egypt? God answers, "Thus shall you say to the Israelites, Ehyeh sent me to you." ...Ehyeh-Asher-Ehyeh...shall be my name forever..., this shall be my appellation for all eternity. This phrase has been translated as; "I am that I am," "I am who I am," or "I will be what I will be." It evokes the name YHVH.
