You can disconnect the 1996 Jeep transmission lines with a 9/16 open end wrench. Be prepared for Transmission Fluid to come out of the transmission lines.

It will bolt up. But it will not work. The 96 transmission is a computer controlled transmission/ Electronic. The 79 is not.
You need to replace the quick disconnect. Special tools are required to separate the joint without doing damage. Those lines are transmission cooling lines that bring the ATF to and from the cooler.
The transmission may not be building up pressure until the fluid warms up. Check the fluid level to make sure that its full, then check the transmission filter as it could be stopped up.
