Does doxycycline help wisdom tooth pain?

The short answer is yes. Doxycycl is a broad spectrum antibiotic and there may be several different types of bacteria involved in a wisdom tooth infection. After all, everything goes in the mouth. I'm taking Doxycycl right now but my situation may be different because I've undergone root canal therapy. I was surprised to experience moderate to severe pain after the root canal since I knew the nerve was removed, but then I found out that the infection can spread out of the tooth. I was in constant pain by the time I called my dentist and he prescribed the Doxycycl for me immediately. I took it twice a day and after a day and a half the pain was gone. I'm still taking it in fact to assure that the infection doesn't return. In my case the pain and throbbing involved my jaw from my ear to the middle of my chin, and at it's worst the side of my head. Also, I had swelling in my neck between my jaw and tounge, which I now believe from research was a lymph gland. Doxyclycline is an antibiotic. It only reduces pain when the infection subsides. Wisdom teeth have to come out. Take whatever the oral surgeon prescribes and then have them out - all of them at once is best. Get it over with and you'll be happier.
