Carlisle lived in UK for a while, but when he became a vampire, he migrated all around Europe when he realized he didnt have to be a monster (meaning he could drink animal blood instead of human blood). After a while he wanted friends. He moved to America and went working in hospitals all around. One day in Chicago in 1918, he found Edward dying of the Spanish Flu, and changed him into a vampire. Around 10 years later they found Esme who had jumped off a cliff, then they found Rosalie somewhere in the Northeast. Then they went to Washington to Forks, and made the treaty with the wolves. After a while Jasper and Alice came and were already vampires. Jasper had come from an army of vampires in Texas and found Alice, who didnt know where she was from. She told him she could see the Cullens. They found the Cullens and settled down easily. Then they moved up to Alaska and lived there until 2 years before the Twilight events happened and moved BACK to Forks.
So that's where the Cullens lived and a bit of history...
It's in Washington, along with most of the characters, and in the movie Bella mentions that their house 'isn't in town'. She also says later on in the books that the drive is about a mile long, so that leaves a lot of scope. Meyer has taken a real location and added fictional parts to it, and it looks like the mansion is one of these.
