There are 50 areas of the United States that have received the status of State. If you are like me you will never forget the song, "Fifty Nifty United States" and can recite them all in alphabetical order. There has been talks in recent years of adding Puerto Rico as a 51st state, but it is still only a territory. It is also worth noting that the District of Columbia (Washington D.C.) is not a state, but it does receive 3 votes in the Electoral College (the equivalent of the smallest number of votes any state can have, 2 Senators and 1 Representative in the House). The House of Representatives also accepts delegates from the various territories of the United States. While these delegates do not have a vote on the floor, they do serve on and vote in committees like all Representatives and are elected to 2 year terms. There authority can, however, be weakened at any time by a majority of elected Representatives.
