Basically because that was what they were bred to be. St Bernards were working dogs, pulling sleds and carts, they needed at bit of size for that. After several generations of controlled breeding - only lettig big males mate with big females, then that's what you get.
The Saint Bernard is a huge animal with a muscular build, yet he has a very docile, almost sad look about him. These dogs come in both long haired and short haired varieties. The former has a coat of medium length, which is rough in texture. The latter has a short, close fitting coat, which is also rough to the touch. The coloring of the coat is red and white or white and red, depending on the markings. The weight of this huge dog is around 125-180 pounds, and in height females can reach around 25-30 inches, and males 27-33 inches.
My st bernard has fluff coming off him a lot of the time, not too much but some as you'de expect from dogs, but at the moment he is malting (early summer) and its quite a lot ;D but its starting to stop now so i'de say its about a month or more depending on how often you groom him xxx
Because of it's "working dog" (guarding cattle)nature, it can be reared for that purpose or if it is meant for a family dog, it's tempermant is a little slow to mature but with the right love and care this breed of dog is a good, friendly natured dog.
between 160 and 240 lb for a male, a tiny bit lower for females.
Our St Bernard is 18 years young and still going strong! Sheba has a little back hip trouble but still has all her other faculties. She is as loving and sweet as she was when we brought her home at 8weeks. Our vet believes she is the oldest living St. Bernard on record ever! Her best friend and fellow St. Bernard Vashti lived to be 14 before her health failed.
if the color is a sort of brown color or its a big dog its proably part saint bernard
They are extremely intelligent and love to please. Easy to train and love children. At 7 mo, ours weighs about 100# and is getting bigger. This is the 2nd one we've had - the fitst was years ago. Both named "Bear". Such a love!
Dogs are carnivores, although they are not an obligate carnivore like cats. Meat provides most, if not all, the nutrients a dog needs. However, dogs are very adaptable and can scavenge for food, so their stomachs can deal with vegetable matter. Plants and vegetables can be used as part of a dog's diet, but they aren't a necessity.
Dogs can survive on an omnivorous diet, but it does not mean it is the best diet for them. The assumption that dogs are natural omnivores remains to be proven, whereas the truth about dogs being natural carnivores is very well-supported by the evidence available to us.

A St. Bernard dog can weigh up to 250 pounds and stand almost three feet tall on its four legs. They are also known as Alpine Mastiffs.
