Can a domesticated wolf be allowed to enter a dog show?

User Avatar

Asked by Evil18

It's an opinion but I do not think wolves should be able to compete in dog shows. Wolves would be very difficult to tame. They wouldn't stay in their cages and would become feisty. They are pack animals so they like to stay in the wild with their family to play, fight, and hunt. They are also very self-reliant so they would not like being given their food by people. We would have to serve them mammals, hooved animals, birds, fruits, and berries. Dogs and wolves do not have the same physical appearances. Wolves have heavy neck muscles, long legs, small paws, and five front toes and 4 back toes. Wolves are not allowed to be kept as pets, either! In most states it is illegal to have wolves as pets so they could not compete very often. If wolves do compete they would make other competing dogs very uncomfortable and nervous and the dogs wouldn't be able to compete or do their best. Dog shows are for domestic dogs, even though they are related they are still two completely different species. Wolves are not dogs therefore they cannot be in a dog show.

Can a neutered dog participate in dog shows?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It depends on the purpose of the show (cute, tricks, obedience) each will have its own rules. The American Kennel Club prohibits spayed or neutered dogs from conformation competitions. It states:

To be eligible to compete, a dog must:

  • be individually registered with the American Kennel Club
  • be 6 months of age or older
  • be a breed for which classes are offered at a show
  • meet any eligibility requirements in the written standard for its breed

Spayed or neutered dogs are not eligible to compete in conformation classes at a dog show, because the purpose of a dog show is to evaluate breeding stock.

For aesthetic reasons neutered male dogs may be implanted with silicone testicles (e.g. Neutricles).

Neutered dogs can participate in AKC shows in such performance events as Obedience, Agility, and Rally (sort of a cross between Obedience and Agility). They can not show in Conformation. There are also events for particular types of dogs--herding and tracking, for example--in which they can participate. Some cities have non-AKC, just-for-fun shows with categories like "furriest," "most kisses per minute," and so forth, and they do not care whether your dogs is neutered or not.

Back in 1988 - 1997, Acey, a German Shepard (female) won over 320 dog shows in her lifetime. Living to be over 15, Aceyn stopped agility and frisbee trials at age 11. She had a disease called gigeliteus. Which is where a dog cannot move around very well. She still did obedience trials, but only for one more year and losing abour 2/3 of what she did. My great grandma was the owner of Acey and that is how i know this story :)

A lot of people involved in dog shows consider it a sport, and often refer to it as "the sport of purebred dogs". It is not a physical sport in the traditional sense (like baseball or football are), but is a very involved hobby.

How much prize money does the winner of the Westminster Dog Show get?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A purse (monetary prize) is not offered to the winners of the Westminster Dog Show. The winner of Best in Show as well as the winners of each distinct group (Hound Group, Working Group, Terrier Group, Toy Group, Non-Sporting Group and Herding Group) are awarded a silver plated trophy. Most show dog enthusiasts and handlers/owners of show dogs would probably tell you that the esteem of winning Westminster, which is a prestigious dog show with a long and storied history, is worth more to them than any monetary award they could be given.

There is not enough information in the question to accurately answer. However, in every show, there are many Best of Breed winners -- one from each breed. These winners all compete within their groups and one is chosen as Best In Group. Those group winners then compete for Best In Show.

Can mixed breeds enter into The Westmister Kennel Dog Show?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The AKC's Board of Directors has voted unanimously to proceed with a program for mixed breed dogs which will allow it to act even more broadly and effectively as the dog's champion. The creation of this program ushers in new opportunities for AKC's constituents and clubs and will allow the organization to grow and flourish. Right now I have not seen a show that mixed breeds compete yet.
