Facts of endangering the elderly:

  • Before an elderly person is ready to be put into a nursing home and if they can still get around and are mentally sound they are targets for all types of crime. Purse snatching is a big one; robbers breaking in and stealing and can lead to murder in many cases; some stores can cheat the elderly out of money; new technology such as new ways of banking can confuse an elderly person.
  • Some elderly people are driving and some should not be driving. They may be on medications that make them less mentally alert. It is often difficult for their families to have their parent's driver's license taken away for their own safety.
  • Some elderly parent or parents who prefer to be independent and they often have times where they are not capable to do so, but unless a more than one doctor can attest that person is incompetent to live alone there is nothing the family can do. This is a great frustration and worry for the children of the elderly and they can get lost.
  • Those elderly parents that are still living in their home or somewhere else on their own may get their medications mixed up or forget to take them which can lead to death.
  • With so many children now being caregivers to their elderly parents it is a tough task. It also depends how ill one or both of the elderly parents are and what type of illness it is. Example: Alzheimer's is a nasty disease where the elderly person is trapped in their own body as their mind deteriorates. Often the children of any parent who has Alzheimer's is not prepaired to handle possible outbursts of anger; the parent can walk off and get lost; verbal and physical abuse towards their caregiver (generally daughters look after their parents.) It is often difficult for the caregiver to turn on their parents and realize that they can no longer look after their parent or parents and have to make a decision to put them into a nursing home and as a result of that caregivers can sometimes get frustrated and become rough with their parent or, be so upset and feeling cornered they may leave the home and leave their ill parent behind to fend for themselves. Some caregivers may not understand the demands of the elderly when their minds are not right and may retaliate by letting that parent lay in dirty adult diapers; not paying attention when the parent is in pain or should see a doctor.
  • There are millions of elderly that need to be in nursing homes and simply not enough nursing homes or they are too expensive or are not acceptable for a human to live in. It is often left up to the children in the family to try and find a suitable nursing home for their parents and are soon struck with how expensive it can be. Whether the nursing home looks modern and great the care may be unacceptable so it is important that the family takes turns to visit their elderly parent at different times during the day. Staff in nursing home know when most families come to visit their parent so they will be sure that the patients are groomed properly and it is difficult to know if the parent is getting adequate care.
  • While there are many good nursing homes with a wonderful staff there are still many that do not give adequate care and some nurses that are rough and uncaring and should not have a job looking after the elderly. There are some law suits against staff being caught red handed on video. One 90 year old woman with several types of Arthritis and in a great deal of pain kept complaining to her son that the nurses were hurting her. Luckily the son did not take her complaints as ramblings and he set up a video out of sight and caught two nurses; one holding the old woman by her arms and the other by her legs and yelling at the old woman to shut up as they swung her onto the bed. That went to court and the son won. Management of nursing homes should be on top of their staff constantly and this type of behavior should never be tolerated.
  • It is extremely important that family does not dismiss any complaints that their elderly parent may be complaining about. Some of the complaints are not valid, but some are and it is up to the family to find out what is going on.
