The future of energy sources lie in the non-conventional sources of energy, most importantly solar, wind and tidal energy. Also alternative forms of energy like Hydrogen and BioAlcohol based fuels are close short term alternatives to reduce the dependency on fossil fuel. They produce little or no carbon di oxide, and are cheaper to generate too.
