A house telephone is connected to a network by a physical connection of wires over land that join all landlines together to a central network provider (think SBC or Verizon), while a cell phone receives it's connection without a physical connection and instead connects basically like a radio receiver with antenna towers on the ground called repeaters that echoe a broader signal to a more specific local area. (Simple answer: house phones are connected by wires and cell phones are connected without wires-like radios)

A land line is any phone in a building (and pay phones too) that are plugged into a phone jack and use telephone wires to transport calls. It can also be a service like Vonage that uses the internet to transport calls. Cell phones use signals that are transported by towers and don't use phone lines or the internet.

Both phones can make calls, and with some house phones you can see the history of the people you've called, like a cell phone. But you can't text, take pictures or video, play games, and get internet on a home phone, and you usually can on a cell phone.

A regular telephone is basically stationary where a cell phone is mobile. Even if you have a cordless phone, the signal will only reach so far. A cell phone you can use anywhere there are towers.

Well, cellphones can do much more than calls. However on a house phone, or 'landline' when you call 911 iy is tracked immediatley, but with cellphones, they don't know where you are.

What is a 'house phone number'?

Before cell phones, anyone who had telephone service had a "house phone" or what is now called a "landline". Since cell phones have become popular, people will often use the words "house phone" to distinguish between that service/number and their cell phone service/number.
