If the title is in your name only, then the new buyer will not be able to put the title in his name. If it was repossessed, then the lienholder was able to sell it and the sale is valid.

What do you do if nobody wants to sign a title?

If you want the title to be transferred the owner listed on the Certificate of Title is the only one who can sign it over. If they won't sign then you cannot take over ownership of the vehicle. If you want the title to be transferred the owner listed on the Certificate of Title is the only one who can sign it over. How is a parts only title converted to a regular title?

If the previous owner signed off on the vehicle as "parts ONLY", then that means that the title is non-transferable. When a vehicle is sold as parts only, there doesn't even have to be a title. It could just be a slip of paper stating that's how the vehicle was sold; however, if you're a LICENSED OWNER of one of the above, you can claim the vehicle as abandoned/salvaged/auctioned, ect. which you would need proof of, and then the DMV would issue you a new title in your name stating one of the above or something similar.

How do obtain a title to a vehicle if i discover there is a lien on it. I have the bill of sale and was misled by the owner?

The owner cannot sell the vehicle without signing the original title. A bill of sale is not an official ownership document for any motor vehicle - only the state issue title can suffice for that. You have been duped - and need to return the vehicle to the owner and demand your money back. If they refuse, you may have a claim to stake in small claims court. Without that original title (which the owner obviously does not have) ownereship cannot be transferred to another person, especially without the lien holders signature. The agency holding the lien is the only one who can offer this vehicle for sale as they hold the title. If the registered owner cannot provide you with that original title of ownership, then they don't own the car at all and it is not theirs to sell in the first place.

Can a car be title in one name but registered in another?

The only way that a person could register a car in one name and title it to another in CA would be if you put the person who is going to operate the vehicle as the "Registered Owner" and put the other person on as the "Legal Owner" This would mean the person who is listed as the "Lien Holder" would receive the title and the vehicle can not be sold or transferred without the lien holder signing off the title. How do you get a title for a vehicle if you buy a car without one?

Call local insurance Companies that do a title bond Buying a car without a title is very foolish. You may have a vehicle that was stolen. You may have a vehicle that was totally wrecked and rebuilt. You may be in deep on this car. I suggest you contact the previous owner and demand a title or a refund of your money.

The one with the name on the title, if it is free and clear. Otherwise, finance companies that finance vehicles are the official owners until the loan on the vehicle is paid off.

How long does a company have to collect on a reposed car?

As long as it takes to either get the car back or to be paid what is owed. The one who defaulted on the car loan is not the owner ... unless one has the clear title to any vehicle, they are not the legal owner ... registered owner, yes, but not the legal one.

You bought a car but the guy you bought it from does not have the title how do you get your title?

Lost Vehicle TitleGenerally you can apply for a lost title through your state Department of Motor Vehciels or Department of Licensing. It may make it easier if the previous owner goes with you (assuming he is the registered owner). States normally require that a previous owner notify them that a vehicle has been sold. In addition: You will have to submit an application for a lost title/damaged title. I believe only the registered owner of the vehicle from when it was title originally can obtain a replacement. In Ca the lost/not received/transfer form is available at DMV thiis is used for sale on auto where seller still has the title and never transfereed to themselves yet so has no "title" so you include additional title (form is a blank need to fill out all info on vehicle , seller, and buyer turn in with the other title(the one your seller never turned in for themselves, or you can use the lost/not received/transfer form if the other has been lost
