According to http://www.battleofbritain.net/0016.html the JU88, although originally designed as a meduim bomber, proved to be a very versatile aircraft and was fitted with airbrakes for use as a dive bomber. It was used in this capacity during the battle of Britain so I have no doubt it was used that way on the Eastern front as well. Michael Montagne
