According to Herodotus, the abduction of Helen, and the destruction of Troy in retaliation, was the beginning of the feud between Asia and Europe.
For the Greeks, this was the protracted war between Persia and the Greek city states; which occupied almost all of Greek history, until Alexander the great finally destroyed Persian power at the battle of Gaugamela.
For the Romans the great Eastern power which they could sometimes defeat, but never destroy, was the Parthian empire of the Arsacids.
Even today, the Western powers find themselves continually opposed to the Islam republics of Iraq, Iran, and Syria.
The Trojan War is one explanation of how we got to where we are today.

According to me I will say,yes the epic of Homer are probably a reliable source of information about history of the ancient Greeks because we get hints about life during this period from two great epic poems, the Iliad( the greatest source of information about the Trojan War) and Odysseus, reveal much about the values of the ancient Greeks.
