Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) was a Scottish teacher for the deaf, and both his mother and wife were deaf. He had an early interest in mechanical hearing devices. The deaths of his two brothers in 1867 and 1870 from tuberculosis led his family to emigrate to Canada, and he eventually established a school and laboratory in Boston, MA. Here he conducted the experiments on speech modulation of electrical current that led to the invention of the telephone.
