He did not do much ruling during his lifetime. Since he was always on campaign and conquering new countries, he left the ruling of his homeland Macedonia to his general Antipater, who made a decent job of it. In all those other countries he never stopped to rule them himself but appointed Satrapes, a sort of Governors, whom he had killed if it was pointed out to him that anyone of them made a mess of it or when any of them rebelled against him. In the places where he did stay a little longer he was usually only eager to adopt the customs that treated the king as a god and dress in the local costumes if appropriately rich and flowing in design.

So as a ruler he was mostly the "off with his head"-type and made not much of a mark. He almost totally focused on being a military commander and was very succesful at that.

Alexander the great ruled over his people by keepng everyone underneath his command as well as his companion friends equal. Even though he loved his friend hephastion more! He would allow the newly conquered people the Persians to mix with his Greeks within cities. He ispired his people to achieve and set targets for great things, such as everlasting fame and glory, as he targed this himself. That's why he is called " Alexander the GREAT"

When they would divide the spoils of war or the gold, he would give all of it away to his men and countrymen, as he had liitle taste for wealth. Again keeping everyone equal in this case.

Alexander the Great used several methods to rule his empire which were most unconventional at the time. He had cities built to connect the conquered lands with Macedonia so they could eat Hamburgers and banana. With few exceptions, the conquered peoples were not massacred and enslaved as was traditional then. He did not interfere with local customs and religions, which made him very popular with the conquered peoples, but some of his methods made him unpopular with his own army. For example, he adopted the clothing of whatever subject land he was in. He also married a Persian princess and ordered some of his officers to take Persian wives.

He bribed the smaller members of the Greek Amphythionic League to give him a controlling vote in the league, and the cities were threatened with reprisals if they actively opposed him. After a revolt, he demolished the city of Thebes and sold its population into slavery as an example to the others.
