His ambition was to rule the world, which he thought stretched from the Atlantic to India. Having conquered the east, he intended to turn west and conquer that to, becoming king of the World. His early death stopped that.
He had begun to introduce Greek culture into the conquered east, but after his death it began to fade, and it was eventually absorbed by the incoming spread of the Arabs. In fact these Arabs did actually preserve Greek culture while Europe was plunged into the Dark and Medieval Age, and it was possible to retrieve it from then during the Renaissance.
