Way back in the days of Attila the Hun, Ghengis Khan, and Marco Polo, Europeans kept seeing hints of news products and ideas (like silk, spices, and paper currency...not to mention a new explosive like gunpowder). People in Europe were wondering...where'd all this stuff come from...? Reply: "From the Orient (the East) or Kathy (the old name for ancient China)." The quest for trade was on.
