The city of Rome was far away from the frontiers of the empire and therefore did not need much protection until the final years of the empire, when she too was attacked five times and sacked twice. By then, the Roman armies could not cope with repeated attacks, raids and invasions of Roman Empire, especially in its western part. In its later days the Roman Empire struggled to protect itself from attacks and invasion from across its vast frontiers. In Europe they stretched from the Atlantic to the Black Sea and there were many attacks by many peoples who lived north of it. The Romans stationed armies along the frontiers of the rivers Rhine and Danube. In Asia, armies where stationed in Turkey and Syria to protect this part of the empire from attacks by the Persians. Over time, the size of the army was increased from 125,000 to an estimated 400,000.Rome was also protected by the Roman army, who fight in close combat and so used to what their doing. They fight in formation which is made them into effective fighting forces. The Roman army are very well trained that they can rest one night and fight tomorrow, while their enemy is tried from the battle from yesterday. The Roman soldiers are well paid, well trained, and well armed that made them the strongest fighting forces in the world, until when all the soldiers don't fight for the empire, but for themselves and also when the title of " emperor," became meaningless.
