The atomic bombs (Fat Man and Little Boy) were developed in Los Alamos, New Mexico. They were dismantled and put on a train to San Francisco. They were then transferred to the naval ship USS Indianapolis. The ship steamed at record speed to the Pacific atoll of Tinian. On the way back to Hawaii, the Indianapolis was sunk by Japanese subs!

Little Boy (A uranium gun-type atomic device) was placed on the Enola Gay, an air force Bomber - B-29 Super-Fortress. On the morning of August 6, 1945 Pilot Paul Tibbets flew the B29 over Hiroshima and dropped the bomb at 8:15 am Hiroshima time.
Fat Man (an implosion plutonium device) was placed on another B-29 super frotress called Bockscar piloted by Charles Sweeney. At 11:02 AM local time, Fat Man detonated above Nagasaki
