In 1781, Cornwallis and his troops were set up in Yorktown, because this was a good location for them to get supplies. However, they were surrounded by French and American soldiers. The French navy took control of Chesapeake Bay, cutting off the British supply ships. Cornwallis was trapped and under seize for two weeks. On October 17, 1781, General Cornwallis had no other choice than to surrender.

The British General,Cornwallis set up a base at Yorktown, located on the peninsula in Chepsapaeke Bay.From there, his army could receive supplies by ship from New York.Washington saw Cornwallis's decision as a golden opportunity. In August 1781, a large French fleet arrived from the West Indies and blocked Chesapeake Bay. These ships prevented the British from receiving supplies-and from escaping. They also allowed Washington to come from the North and trap Cornwallis on the peninsula.Washington had enough men to do this because a large French force led by General Jean Rochambeau had joined his army.

Washington and his troops marched there and met the French, who helped defeat the British and their general... I think Lafayette sent for General de Grasse and de Grasse sailed with a fleet and fended off the British ships (not sure) and so the British had to retreat.
