He revealed in an interview with ITV's Tom Bradby that he proposed during a holiday in Kenya last month, while staying at an estate owned by the family of Jecca Craig, who is said to be one of his former girlfriends.
He said of the proposal: 'We had a little private time away together with some friends and I just decided that it was the right time really.'
'We had been talking about marriage for a while so it wasn't a massively big surprise. I took her up somewhere nice in Kenya and I proposed.'
Middleton described the proposal as 'very romantic', but has refused to reveal whether he proposed on bended knee.
When asked whether he knew he was going to propose on the holiday, William revealed he 'had been planning it for a while' but it 'just felt really right out in Africa.'
Earlier this year, the prince told Sky1: 'Africa's the perfect place to come. The locals haven't a clue who I am and I love that. When I step off the plane I'm like, "Yes, I'm back."'
