It ended when he was fighting in France in a place called Mantes (which is west of Paris) in 1087 as they were burning down a church sparks flew and this frightened the horse that William was on and quickly jerked away. But William did not expect this so he hit his stomach on his saddle and fell to the ground in pain he died three days later.
