In the most basic sense: During WWI European nations had made various agreements with their colonial possessions and generally promised them more freedoms from control and even complete freedom in some cases (if they were to help in the war effort). Because of this and other factors other nations were pulled into the war (keep in mind at this time Europe possessed vast quantities of overseas territories and thus this affects the majority of the populated world). After the war many of these "promises" were not kept and this led to the general dissatisfactions of the nations that were pulled into the war. This led to movements against control from the European powers and lead to general decolonization and formation of many new free nations.
