There were no safety measures taken at all when it came to the lives of the workers. There were locked doors, blocked hallways, no fire alarms, and no fire sprinklers. The rooms that the people worked in were over crowded with immigrants from all over Europe and the rest of the world. And because they were poor and immigrants they were over worked and under paid. And the workers were afraid to complain about the conditions for fear of loosing their jobs that they needed in order to support themselves and their families.
The elevators were overfilled, the fire escape failed under the load of so many people, and the stairs were locked because the owners were always afraid that people would steal shirtwaists, and the fire department did not have ladders that could reach the 8th, 9th, and 10th floors where the factory was.
The final death toll was 148, 141 died on the scene while 7 others died at the hospital
More properly known as the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, more than 100 garment workers (mainly women) died when fire swept through their high rise workshop. Management had locked exit doors, and workers either died in the fire, or jumped 9-10 stories to their death to escape being burned. See link at bottom of the page for more information.
