Not so sure that this is correct but I was told that a village or group of people were put on boats with no food and were cast off main land China. They eventually drifted to what is now Japan. Being on board the ship they had nothing to eat except any fish that jumped on the boat, or were caught.
They ate the fish raw and when they landed in what is now Japan they continued the style of eating fish raw.
It seemed to have begun as a preservation technique of fish. The original type of sushi, known today as nare-zushi (馴れ寿司, 熟寿司), was first developed in Southeast Asia, spread to south China before introduction to Japan. Fish was salted and wrapped in fermented rice, a traditional lacto-fermented rice dish. Nare-zushi was made of this gutted fish stored in fermented rice for months at a time for preservation. The fermented rice was discarded and fish was the only part consumed. This, however, is far from the sushi that is seen today.
It was first made in south East Asia in the 8th century as a way to preserve fish by enveloping it with fermented rice.

Because Japan (where it was invented) is an island, and therefore surrounded by water. Thus, they didn't have much to eat besides seafood and rice. So, they invented a special way to serve the few types of food they had-sushi!
No, Sushi is Japanese. It is cold cooked rice with vinegar and topped with raw or cooked fish, egg, or even pork or chicken and wrapped in a seaweed called nori. It's delicious! My favorites are white tuna and salmon.
Sushi is a Japanese dish that is thought to have originated in southern China with a dish of rice and fermented fish, similar to the earliest Japanese form (narezushi). However, its exact origin can only be speculated.
