== == They didn't. After the French defeat the French government moved from Paris to Vichy which was in the part of France that the armistice agreement said would remain unoccupied. It was the legitimate government of France and continued to govern the country although it became a puppet of the Germans. It was not against France or the French people except in the sense that it was a fascist Dictatorship and thus denied them their fundamental rights while collaborating with the occupying Germans.

Vichy France is a popular allied propaganda term for France occupied by Nazi Germany from about l940-44. The French did NOT use the term, it was coined by Churchill, it is believed who wanted a need, two-word clause- like Nazi Germany. There was no organization called the Vichy Party, unlike the Nazi Party, however, again showing the French did not take kindly to the term.

Yes France had colonies during World War 2. Some of the colonies joined the Vichy Free French and some joined the axis forces (via the Vichy Free French). Most of the French Colonies chose to go against France once the Nazis took over France and the Vichy Free French was formed. They allied themselves with the Allied Forces instead. The colonies were French-Indochina (Viet Nam - allied with the Allied Forces); Chad, French Congo and Gabon (went with the Free French) Guadeloupe, Martinique of the West Indies and French Guiana joined the Free French in 1943 Syria, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco were under Vichy French control until the Allied Forces liberated them, then they allied with the Allied Forces. French Polynesia joined the Vichy French right away French North Africa, French West Africa and French Equatorial Africa allied themselves with the Free French Forces under General Charles De Gaulle and they fought with the Allied forces against the Germans.

Syria was a French Colony when the war began. When France was invaded & defeated by Germany, then Syria came under the control of the Vichy French government which was an ally of Germany (Hitler). The Vichy French in Syria did very little to help Hitler, because they were too distant from where Germany was fighting. The British military in the Middle East defeated the Vichy French forces in Syria early in the war, thereafter Syria was under the control of Britain until the end of the war. Although combat between the British & Hitler's allies (Vichy French) took place in Syria, Syria & its citizens were generally not allied with either side during the war.
