In France the King ruled in the Ancien Regime. This means he had the divine right to rule.He thought he got his power from God. At first there was an assembly to make a constitution and then there was a legislative assembly called the "Convention Nationale". A policy of terror led by Robespierre and which caused the beheading of the king Louis XVI put an end at the first revolutionnary government. So by 1794 a new governmental system was created : the "Directoire", with an executive power of five persons and two legislative assemblies : the "Conseil des Anciens" (elder's council) and the "Conseil des Cinq Cents" (council of the five hundred). Napoleon put an end at the revolutionnary period with his coup of 1799 and he founded the "Consulat".

During the French Revolution (also called the war of the Bastille), from 1789 to 1799, the people of France revolted against the absolute monarchy which gave the King every power over everything at all times. In July of 1789, the Bastille, a Parisian prison, was overthrown and all its prisoners set free. As the revolution quickly escalated in size, the Declaration of Rights of Man and of the Citizen was created in August of 1789. During the years to follow, the people would gain more control over the nation and in 1792, the Republic of France was created and King Louis XVI was executed. But the war was still not over: a group of men called the Jacobins took France into a harsh Dictatorship, called the Reign of Terror. In 1795 the Jacobins were overthrown and replaced by a body of five directors until finally, in 1799, general Napoleon Bonaparte took control of France. So to answer your question, the royalty did not win the French revolution, the people did.
