Long ago, in king James era people where very suspicious and if u where accused of being a witch your ankle would be tied to your neck and you would be thrown in a river if u drown you where innocent and if you floated you where a witch and would be burned at the stake, either way. You died

'Witch' means 'wise' and people so designated were the sages of the pre-Christian society of Europe. When Christianity began to become predominant all competing structures were eliminated, often by gruesome means.
Also all aged and widowed women who were no longer useful and a burden on the social network were designated witches and burned to relieve society of having to support them.
