they would take their clothes and a washboard down to the river, where they would stick the article of clothing in the river, take it out, then put the article on the washboard and rub them back and forth. If they had soap this is where they would use it, then rinse. If they didn't have soap they would be done with that piece. they would repeat the process until all the laundry was done.
