Best Answer

At the time of the Civil War, few garments were ready made. Except for the uniforms of soldiers from the ranks, garments were custom made from bolts of cloth. Except for tailors, most garment makers were women called seamstresses, sewing for their fathers, brothers, husbands, and sons, or for pay; or in the case of plantation life, slaves who made the garments for their owners.
