There are many different meditation practices and techniques among Buddhists. One common technique which is shared by some Hindus, is called vipassana meditation and it calls for sitting quietly and concentrating single-mindedly on your breath. As you sit and pay attention to your breathing you notice that thoughts arise - like 'hey, what should I have for dinner?' - and in this technique you simply acknowledge that you are thinking, and then let go of the the thought and pay attention to your breathing.

Other techniques involve visualizing the Buddha or some other person or object, or concentrating only on a single question or concept (analytical meditation). The technique is less important than the result, which is being able to concentrate single-pointedly, without being distracted.

Another method is Jongrom, which is meditating while walking, often back and forth between two places, concentrating on each step as you go.

Meditation masters are always meditating. Meditation is not a skill that one practices for so many minutes each day and then forgets about; it is not like going for a walk for example. It is practiced formally every day, but the resulting peacefulness should be carried into all other activities. The more one meditates formally, the better. Most practitioners find after a while that meditating first thing in the morning and/or last thing at night are the very best times for formal meditation.

Buddhist meditation might be done formally in a meditation hall with other meditators, or it could be done at home alone in your room or in a special space at home that you set aside for meditation. It could also be done in a peaceful place in nature. In American Buddhism people often go to a retreat center to practice meditation intensives for a shorter or longer period, depending on their level of experience in meditation.

No, they do not "have to" meditate. Buddhism is not a religion; it does not require one to accept any creed. Buddhism is actually a practice or set of practices. The only belief necessary is the belief that the practices may help one to live better. Meditation is one of those practices. Its purpose is to enable practitioners to free themselves from conceptual thought. Thoughtless, alert awareness is very simple, but it's difficult to free oneself from incessant thinking. Meditation is an aid to doing that.

As per the original teachings of the Buddha, he said: light your own light. It means that we should be enlightened with the Truth by going within. We should not keep on desiring pleasures of this material world because this material world is full of suffering or dukkha. Therefore the Buddhists use some terminologies such as mindfulness which means to empty the mind to become conscious, to be silent, to renounce the cravings of this material world. They meditate on the question of who we are and why we are here, to attain the ultimate goal of Nirvana. Nirvana is a state of eternal bliss and everlasting joy. It is a state of liberation from the cycle of samsara, of death and rebirth. This is the Buddhist key principle of life and of meditation.
