Gills, as opposed to lungs, can filter out oxygen from water. And oxygen is something most creatures need to stay alive.
Gills are to let the fish 'breathe' underwater, I don't think they help them swim though... Answer Coming Soon...
It filters the water out. Basically the 'breath in' water and take the oxygen from it and the water filters out through the gills
It has gills so it can breathe underwater. I hope this helps. In fact, I actually asked this question on Answers.com and when I couldn't find it, I was annoyed so I went on line to a different sight and found this simply good answer.
People aren't fish, and can't breathe under water. Our lungs can't extract (enough) oxygen to sustain life from water. We'd drown. When people do breathe under water, they do so with the help of equipment that basically let them take a bit of the atmosphere with them, allowing the lungs to work just like they were still above the surface.
Yes, that's why they have their gills they take in the water and breath in the oxygen, through the water, and let go of the water through their gills
to let water pass over the gills
Yes, but they breathe air too, thru the labyrinth organ. In fact if you don't let them get to the top of the tank they can suffocate.
