If it's the same as my 99, then there is an adjustment inside the centre console. There are 2 ways of getting to it.
Method 1: The easy way. Reach into the console storage compartment. There is a hole with a removable plastic plug in the forward wall of it, directly behind the parking brake lever. This allows some access to the adjuster. You will have to lift the lever to about half way in order to get a socket on it. You will need a half inch or a 13mm Deep socket. If you can't get it go to method 2 below.
Method 2: Remove the rear portion of the console. This is done by removing 2 screws in the bottom of the storage compartment and 2 more under the shifter bezel. The bezel just pulls off revealing the screws. Once the console is lifted up you will be able to see the 2 cables, left and right and that they join onto a single cable that is pulled by the lever. There is a threaded rod with a nut on it. That is the adjustment.

The parking brake cables are located directly beneath the handle. Pull off the rubber boot. Loosen the locknut and tighten the tensioner.
